Bronzed Soirée

And here is my SMUT Soirée get-up!  I received a million compliments on this dress.  When asking where it was from, I love the reaction in telling party-goers it was from H&M.  I bought the dress this past weekend when H&M had a 25% off G20 promotion.  (Only good thing about the G20 if you ask me.)  The dress came to $38.  Shocked?  Good!  Shoes are a Zara sale purchase for $40 and Prada nylon bag is from my Western days.  My cocktail party make-up  wasn’t that far off from the everyday.  I darkened my eyes with Annabelle’s trio eyeshadow in Haute Chocolate and I am wearing Rimmel Stay Glossy in Fuchsia Fever over top of Nars Funny Face lipstick .  CM

SMUT Soiree with Lainey Gossip

We were at the 5th annual SMUT Soiree last night at Audi Downtown where the night was filled with lots of sugar, girly cocktails, cars we dream about, gossip, and good times with friends.  The highlight of the event featured a panel discussion with Canada’s queen of gossip - Lainey from Lainey Gossip, along with Dan Levy from MTV Canada and George Pimental - a celeb photographer who knows a thing or two about the stars. Between the three of them, they had a lot of inside scoop and shared some funny stories. Very entertaining. We particularly enjoyed Dan’s one liners!  Here are a few shots from the night….

Maynards candy was a sponsor of the event, along with The Bay and Fashion Magazine. Candy was EVERYWHERE! We’re still dizzy from the sugar high.

Sweet wheels.

Lainey, Dan, and George.

With the lovely Lainey.

Planning a getaway with Ashleigh. We were hoping someone would give us the keys, but no such luck.

With Dan Levy…we love his glasses!  Tomorrow we’ll be dishing on our budget party outfits – we love to dress up! JD & CM xo

Little Miss Brightside

It’s amazing how an outfit can make you feel a certain way. If you’re tired of feeling drab in the same old – bust out some new colours! It will make a world of difference. This is my Boss Orange skirt that I got at a sample sale ($40). The material is like a parachute and I found it tricky to find a good top for it at first, but this one from FCUK is a pretty good compliment. It’s on sale now for $39. I paired it with a chunky black belt and comfortable peep toe heels from Feet First. A lot of people think these shoes are vintage and that’s why I like them! JD

Ragamuffin ‘Do

I have been really lazy when it comes to my hair lately so putting it on top of my head seems to be the best solution.  Buns are popular this season and they were all over the runways for the Fall 2010 shows however, when my mother saw me, she told me I look like a ragamuffin (my mothers favorite word) and to fix my hair.  Can’t win them all.  I have worn this skirt so much over the past few months which you can see here and here.   I decided to keep it summery and paired it with a Forever 21 boyfriend shirt ($18) and a necklace ($6).  Shoes were $60 from Steve Madden.  CM

Work It

This is me at Nyood the other night.  I was blogging/tweeting when all my friends were throwing back vodka sodas and dancing.  Needless to say they made fun of me.  My fringe dress is from H&M and it is on sale now for $15.  They sell them in pink and a nude colour as well as black.  Deal of the week if I do say so myself.  I will also say that SDP loves Nyood.  CM

All Shook Up

It was a hot and humid Wednesday afternoon when Christine and I decided to take these shots. We were talking about hair cuts, nail polish, and the guy that walked past us who looked like E from Entourage. We decided it wasn’t the real E because he was too chubby. At that very moment the earth decided to shake and Toronto experienced a 5.5 magnitude earthquake! Luckily we didn’t feel a thing because we were outside, but man did everyone love talking about it….facebook was blowing up with earthquake talk. Ok we were kinda jealous that we missed it.

I wore a skirt that I picked up on the weekend from Liquidation World in Port Colborne. True story. I went in to look for a kitchen table and I walked out with a $10 Kenzie skirt. And no table. I paired it with a top I purchased from Simons in Montreal ($30), and a pair of vintage boots from my best friend’s Auntie Nena. I believe they’re from the 70s. Love them.

I was attracted to this skirt because it reminded me of something you would see at Anthropologie. I could also wear it with a grey or black t-shirt or tank top for a casual feel.

There’s nothing I love more than a pair of perfectly restored vintage boots. JD

Craft Burger

Lunch was so satisfying today – we ordered classic burgers from Craft Burger. YUM!! One bite and we were smitten. Hands down best burger I’ve had in a really long time. Better than Hero Burger and Gourmet Burger & Co. I still need to try BQM and Oh Boy. Then I’ll make my final decision as to the best burger in the city. JD

Rebel Yell

This is as bad ass as I get.  Studded gladiators, leather (faux) and gold jewelery.  When I walked out the door wearing this, my boyfriend asked if I was going to style a hip-hop video.  Hilarious.  A sarcastic hilarious.  He has so much to learn.  Everyone knows that only two gold chains wouldn’t get me on camera for even a second.  Ten is the minimum.  Oh, I would also need a big butt and unfortunately I don’t have one of those.  My faux leather mini is from H&M on Bloor for $20.  T-shirt is from Zara for $19 and gladiators are from H&M for $15.  Chain with the pearl is from VV Boutique in Calgary for $7 and the necklace with the crystal is from Forever 21 for $8.  Ray-Bans were from the Sunglasses Hut boxing day sale, they were $60.  Score!  CM

Glorious Grey

My wardrobe is all over the place with the move so my mornings are spent rummaging through piles of clothing and random boxes desperately trying to get things together. It would be so much easier to buy everything new, but that wouldn’t really be budget-friendly. I decided to go for an almost fully monochromatic look with my Joe Fresh grey jeans ($19), shirt from Jacob ($30), and Zara blazer ($89). I have gotten a lot of wear out of this blazer so I don’t feel bad that it came to a hundo. I paired this ensemble with a skinny belt from Joe Fresh ($9), a pair of shoes I bought SEVEN years ago for $19. These puppies went in the garbage right after I took this photo – they just had to go. And my favourite part of the look is my grandmother’s purse that she bought and used only once – for my parent’s wedding. It’s in perfect condition and I love it.  JD

And The Winner Is…

Last week we submitted our Zoo Keeper post to What I Wore’s Safari Chic style challenge and today Jessica announced us as the winner!  We were most honored because she has been one of our favorite fashion bloggers for a while now.  We particularly like her thrift shopping expertise and how she mixes vintage with modern.  Last fall when we were in Brooklyn, we took some of her shopping recommendations and visited the Brooklyn Flea and some Williamsburg vintage shops.  Thanks for the shout out.  CM & JD

Down In Bedrock

Surprise surprise.  More leopard print… I just can’t resist.  It is my chocolate.  Shirt is $30 from H&M, jeggings are $15 from Costa Blanca and shoes are oldies from Zara.  My necklace is from Forever 21 for $4.  I think the shirt and the necklace combined makes me look like I could be on an episode of the Flintstones non? Eat Pray Love

I cannot wait to see Eat Pray Love! I read the book and just saw a poster for the movie. It comes out August 13th. Without even seeing it, I think Julia Roberts was a p-e-r-f-e-c-t cast for the role of Elizabeth. And I love that Javier Bardem is her Brazilian lover. The trailer looks great…I hope it doesn’t disappoint. JD

Take It Easy

After a long and grueling apartment move this weekend, I escaped from the city to the quiet and peaceful Lake Erie in Niagara. I didn’t pack properly but luckily I had some random old clothes lying around my parents house and managed to piece an outfit together. My top is from Winners and I think it’s actually supposed to be a skirt. I found it years ago for $3 and only got a few wears out of it, but that’s fine by me because it was basically the cost of a chocolate bar! My white shorts are from Winners too. They used to be cigarette pants but I cut them into shorts. Fringe sandals are from Spring shoes and my sunglasses were my grandpa’s. I love the sun and the lake. JD

Lemon Punch

Do you have a piece of clothing or jewelery that will turn heads?  Mine is this necklace.  People stop me on the street, talk to me in elevators and question its origins in stores.  It was an Aldo purchase last summer when Julie and I were taking a stroll down Bloor.  I was wearing this Zara dress and she suggested that the beaded necklace would look good with the dress’ bright shade of yellow.  I bought it and receive compliments on it every time I wear it.  I saw that Aldo is selling them again this year in a new colour pattern.  Shoes were $13 from H&M.  CM

Drake General Store

We were walking down Bathurst street last night and literally stumbled upon the new Drake General Store. We popped in and to our surprise they were having a little opening soiree! We love the look of the store with its rustic, woodsy feel. The Drake General store is Canadian chic at it’s finest. We had fun snapping shots of all the great gift items we’d love to buy for our friends (and ourselves).

Classic Pendleton blankets – a great gift for our friend SJP

This informative encyclopedia would be great for our friends Jessica-ca and Bon Ton

An array of Canadian goodness – perfect for anyone with a cottage in Muskoka

A vintage phone for your favourite long distance friend

A ciggy pen for our sexy secret agent friends – don’t worry mom, it’s just a pen. (For the record CM is fully aware she looks like a ding dong smoking a pen cigarette.)

Other notable items we found:
* An Andy Warhol figurine
* A heart-shaped necklace that said “love this mess”
* Vintage inspired tees
* Harmonica necklace

Karen Elson

I had the pleasure of attending Karen Elson’s show last night at the El Mocambo.  Karen’s album, ‘The Ghost Who Walks’, was produced by her husband Jack White of the White Stripes and has received more than excellent reviews.  I will admit that 50% of me went to see her because of her admirable modelling background.  She won the VH1 model of the year award in 1998 and British Fashion Award for Best Model in 2005.  In between awards, you may have seen her in international ad campaigns for Yves Saint Laurent, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Louis Vuitton, Versace, Christian Dior, Burberry and Chanel – just to name a few.  I won’t be surprised if her music career takes on a similar path as her modelling career as Karen’s live show was a delightful surprise.  I, as well as others around me, were blown away by her voice which was as heavenly as she is beautiful.  Karen’s songs – part folk, part country, part cabaret – succeeded in hypnotizing the crowd with every strum of her guitar.   I was happy to see Karen Elson in a small venue such is the El Mocambo as her career has nowhere to go by up.  I took a video early into the show.  Sorry it is so unsteady – I am really short you know!  I also found this video from last night so please take a look/listen.  CM

Queen Fresh

I haven’t gone grocery shopping in about 2 months now which is kinda bad. I’ve been grabbing bites here, there and everywhere as I run from meetings to events to my next adventure - I’m always on the go. I don’t feel too bad when it’s a healthy option but that’s hard to come by. I thought this baby warrior bowl from Fresh on Queen street would’ve made the cut, but it just tasted like grass and rotten tofu. Definitely not as delicious as the Craft Burger I had the other day or the spicy pad thai I tried at Red Room. Don’t get me wrong, Fresh on Queen is amazing and they have a lot of great options, but this one just isn’t the greatest.

I decided to forget about my lunch and do something a little more fulfilling – search for vintage cut-off jean shorts. And guess what? I found them! To be revealed at a later date. This is my strolling the street look. High waist, pleated pants are from Zara, fringe sandals are from Spring Shoes, crop top is from America Apparel – oh yes you read that correctly – CROP TOP! Loving the 90s comeback. My moto-inspired jacket is from H&M, purse was found on the street, sunglasses were my grandpa’s, and my pop of coral light weight scarf is from The Bay, or La Baie if you are French. JD

Zoo Keeper

Upon walking into the office last week Julie informed me that I looked like a Zoo Keeper in this outfit.  I can deal with that – I believe Zoo Keeper is an extension of the Safari look that is in this season.  My shirt (Value Village) and necklace (flea market) were both thrifted for $4 each.  Pants are H&M and they are on sale right now at H&M for $10 (it would be perfect if they were $7).   Shoes are my summer favorite from Aldo at $40.  CM

O Ma Gawd

I was out for drinks tonight on the beautiful roof top patio of The Spoke Club on King West. As I walked home in the warm weather all I could think to myself was tra-la-la what a great day. Great weather. Good mood. Fun times up a head. Until……I turned the corner to get to my house and this is what I encountered…

Firemen at my FRONT DOOR! dun dun dun….

My first thought was omg did I leave my curling iron on next to some papers? My next thought was omg are my belongings on fire?  And my final thought was omg this is scary, life can change in the blink of an eye. Just at that moment Christine called me and I told her firemen were trying to get into my house and she said “are they hot?” – I had to laugh.
The firemen determined the smoke alarm from the upstairs apartment was going off so they proceeded to break in, as the neighbours were out. To be honest I wasn’t that worried because I didn’t see or smell any smoke. It turned out that their carbon monoxide detector was going off because the battery was low! Can you believe it? But it was a legit scare, what if the carbon monoxide detector was right? I told the firemen they should put together a Public Service Announcement on carbon monoxide detectors, and they said to always keep your instructions and to pay attention to the expiry date – apparently they get old and you have to toss them. Lesson of the day – check your carbon monoxide detector. I’m so glad everything is fine. And to answer Christine’s question – no the firemen were not hot, they were old and grey. But extremely nice :) Thanks firemen. JD

Summer Staple

Alright, maybe white boyfriend blazers were the must-have piece of Summer 2009 but I still love mine and wear it all the time.  Here I am wearing my Zara blazer with a $12 Forever 21 tank, $15 Costa Blanca jeggings, $4 thrifted necklace and Aldo wedges.  CM

Blush Baby

We took a stroll through the beautiful U of T campus for these shots and got stuck in a tunnel of wind under the archway. I wore my blush tone skirt from H&M and paired it with this shirt dress top also from H&M. I wore it once as a dress here but I think I like it as a top better now. My moto-inspired jacket is from H&M too! Wow 3 items from one store…didn’t do that on purpose. Lace-up booties are from Spring shoes ($29) and chain necklaces are from my mom and grandma’s collections. Oh and I don’t know if you can see the buttons on my sleeves but those are button covers I got at a thrift store in Port Colborne. Gotta love random finds. JD

The wind crept up on me!
