For A Good Time, Call

Last night I attended the Canadian premiere of For A Good Time, Call.  Former college frenemies Lauren and Katie are forced to become roommates in New York City, and in order to pay their rent, the unlikely pair start a phone sex line together.  It stars Lauren Miller, Ari Graynor, and Justin Long, with cameos by Seth Rogan, Nia Vardalos, and Kevin Smith.  Directed by Toronto’s Jamie Travis, the film at heart is about female friendship and is hilarious, colourful, and fun to watch.  There’s never a dull moment and it’s different because it’s not a rom com, and it’s not a chick flick – it’s somewhere in between.  Guys will like it just as much as girls…or maybe even more.
After the movie was over, film critic Richard Crouse did a Q&A with the actors, director, and co-writer, and I got a shot with one of the leads, who was super friendly.  The movie comes out Aug. 31st – check it out! JD

Me with Ari Graynor – who looks a lot like Bette Middler!

Steam Whistle Unsigned

On Friday night I went to Steam Whistle for their Unsigned indie music series.  They’ve been doing this event for the past 5 years and it’s pretty awesome.  For $5 cover you get to see a few amazing bands play at the brewrey’s Roundhouse that haven’t been signed to a record label…yet.  This time it was Cai.ro, The Wilderness of Manitoba, and Amos the Transparent.  They were all great but I particularly loved The Wilderness of Manitoba.  They had such a good sound and stage presence.  It’s a cool event definitely worth checking out and a sweet venue too.

Amos The Transparent

Pretty CN Tower

I didn’t get an outfit pic, but I wore leathery leggings, white t-shirt, chambray shirt, and my leather moto jacket.  Kinda like this outfit here. It’s my standard go-to.  JD

The Corsage Project

Where did the week go?  Insane how time flies.  Last weekend I volunteered at an awesome charity event called The Corsage Project.  It was created 12 years ago to help young women in financial need attend their prom by providing them with a new dress, shoes, accessories, and a mini makeover – all free of charge.
My role for the day was personal shopper, which naturally I loved.  I helped girls navigate through the sea of dresses and helped them piece their entire prom look together.  It was a fun experience all 285 girls left with smiling faces.  It brought back good memories of my prom and I considered sharing photos, BUT I’ll save that for another time.  For now I’ll show you shots of the event.  JD

The event took place at the Toronto Reference Library
All of the donated dresses were brand new with tags still on

Great selection of new shoes

Shiny and shimmery

This was my favourite dress from FCUK. If I was going to prom, I would’ve picked this!

Mackage Show FW/12

Last night I attended the Mackage Fall/Winter 2012 fashion show at the Distillery District.  I have a love affair with outerwear and was impressed with each piece that walked down the runway.  Mackage coats are simply the best.  The structure and silhouettes are better than any coats out there, and I love that it’s a Canadian label run by two talented designers from Montreal.  Kudos to a high energy and glamorous show! Jason Wu For Target

I had the pleasure of attending the Jason Wu for Target event yesterday morning at their pop-up shop on King West.  I’m usually not one to get hyped about designer collaborations with mainstream retailers, but this one was legit and I was pleasantly surprised!  The pieces were pretty and feminine, and made me want to dress up and go for a spring walk while holding tulips in my hand.  The best part was good quality material and affordable prices.

Jason Wu spoke to a crowd of excited fashion media and bloggers, and famed stylist Brad Goreski was in attendance too!  Looking forward to the real Target stores.  Sweetness. JD

The Man Repeller

Last night I attended Holt Renfrew’s Man Repeller event. I’ve been a fan of The Man Repeller blog for quite some time so it was a real pleasure meeting Leandra Medine.  Leandra’s blog concept is simple and awesome – it’s about women dressing in trends they love, but men hate.  Such garments include (but are not limited to): harem pants, boyfriend jeans, shoulder pads, full length jumpsuits, jewelry that resembles violent weaponry and clogs.

I can definitely relate to the concept because I have been known to wear such items. I’m an experienced man repeller. I should also add hats, flats, and baggy tops to her definition.  Leandra said “it’s not really about repelling men, you’re dressing to make yourself happy….and if it repels a man, that’s most likely not the man for you.” Tru dat. Love your style. JD

Grace Kelly: An Exhibition

Last night CM and I had the pleasure of attending the opening night gala of Grace Kelly: From Movie Star To Princess – the exhibit at TIFF Bell Lightbox. It was stunning, and I absolutely hate when people use that word, but it was.  It was also lovely, elegant, feminine, and beautiful.  Those words work too. It definitely inspired me to bring out my girly side a bit more often. I love dressing like a man repeller, but pretty is pretty and will never die.

We saw Grace Kelly’s iconic wardrobe from her wedding gown, hats and shoes to her Kelly bag and every day dresses.  There were letters and telegrams, photographs, magazine covers, and ever her Oscar! She was truly made of style and grace and looked so perfect and pretty in every shot.

The royals from Monaco were there – Price Albert II and Princess Charlene. We saw them on their way out with their entourage following behind, so that was cool too.

The Grace Kelly exhibit is on until January 22nd, so be sure to check it out. JD

Paws For The Cause

Last Thursday I went to my first Paws For The Cause event and had a blast!  Paws For The Cause is a Toronto-based organization that raises money for the Ontario Veterinary College’s Pet Trust Fund, and this year a portion of the money raised went to create the Paws For The Cause scholarship which will provide financial assistance to a Veterinary student at the University of Guelph.

The event was held at Airship 37 on Parliament street, and let me tell you – it’s an amazing space! I had never been there before and it’s one of my favourite venues now. They had a dog fashion show, great DJs, and amazing raffle prizes. If you missed it this year, come out next year!

Co-Chairs Paul Smith and Laura Serra did a fantastic job

New Nautical

So two great things about this outfit.  1) This onesie was lifted from the racks of a Toronto Value Village .  2) Having a  friend (ours is Courtney Draycott) who has an eye to spot such exciting pieces.  I ran around town in this nautical number last Wednesday night, starting at “Terraza di Peroni” held at Malaparte – the roof top at the TIFF Bell Lightbox.  It was my fist time in the building and heading up to the 6th floor patio on a hot summer night allowed for a great introduction.  Peroni was flowing and guess what – the golden beer matched my gold buttons.  Score!  CM

Get Your Shuck On

Do like oysters or do you LOVE oysters?  CM loves them and just recently she told me I don’t appreciate the finer things in life because I only kind of like oysters.  I was a bit offended, but my come back was “that’s not true, I like lobster.”  She quickly dropped it.

In any case, if you’re up for a good oyster party be sure to check out the 23rd Annual Ontario Oyster Festival this Sunday, July 17th at Rodney’s Oyster House.  A $30 ticket gets you two drinks and six oysters or a bowl of chilli.  It also supports Environmental Defense, Canada’s most effective environmental action charity.

Come out and enjoy freshly shucked oysters, live bands, DJs, and a shucking competition where the winner will go on to represent Ontario at the Canadian championships in P.E.I.  For tickets, please call 416-363-8105  or purchase at the gates.  Even begins at 2:00 pm in the alley beside Rodney’s Oyster House at 469 King St. W.  Cheers! Toronto Pride 2011

After spending the last handful of Pride Parade Sunday’s on ground level amongst the 1000′s of sweaty (but fabulous) Torontonian’s and tourists, we upped our game on a friends wrap around balcony overlooking the big show.  With spectacular views of the downtown core and Yonge Street (hurray for the continuous delays of One Bloor!) we rocked our rainbow colours and downed Pride Punch.  I was excited to wear my sequined rainbow dress which I have come to call the Giving Dress.  Seriously though, it is the dress that keeps on giving.  Upon its purchase from 69 Vintage, with plans to wear it to the August 2010 Scissor Sisters concert, I was unsure of its fate – would become a one hit wonder, retiring to my closet post concert?  But alas it came in handy for Booby Ball’s disco themed party and most appropriately, Toronto’s Pride Week.  The dress was a hit amongst party goers and a good ice breaker for new faces.  Happy Pride Toronto.

Amazing view of the parade on Yonge Street and the entire city too!

Annual SMUT Soiree

What a busy few weeks it’s been with parties and dressing up.  Last week, we attended the 6th annual Smut Soiree hosted by Lainey Gossip and her crew of celebrity insiders.  The party organized by The Society keeps getting bigger and bigger each year which means the venue gets bigger.  It was held at the Evergreen Brickworks and what a beautiful space it was.  I love that it’s a mix of new and old and indoor and outdoor.
CM and I wore outfits that coordinated with each other, but we didn’t do it on purpose!  This seems to happen a lot with us, kind of like twins wearing the same thing without consulting each other.
CM’s Marilyn dress came from Betsey Johnson in Maui, and my red number came from Urban Outfitters.  I threw on a little jacket from H&M to add to it’s plainness. JD

Power Ball: Thirteeth Floor

After the Conair beauty lounge, we made our way to Power Ball 13 – one of the city’s largest charity events in support of The Power Plant art gallery.  The annual gala raises vital funds for exhibitions and public programs.
The venue was packed with interesting people, contemporary art exhibits, DJs, and porchetta on a spit.  It was a gorgeous night so we spent most of it mingling on the outdoor patio.  Oh warm summer nights on a patio, please stay with us for a while.

Outfit details for JD:
BCBG one-shoulder dress $124
Top Shop heels $100 (from LAB Consignment)
Nine West clutch (gifted)

Outfit details for CM:
BCBG one-shoulder dress $180
Cole Haan wedges $90
H&M clutch $12

The chignon was a fun hair-do, except it was so big it stuck to the velcro tent wall, and hit the roof of the cab while getting in.

Conair Beauty Lounge

Getting ready for a party can be stressful, especially when rushing home from work.  But it’s always amazing when someone else gets ready for you.  Before last Thursday’s Power Ball, we got our hair and make-up done at the Conair beauty lounge in the Thompson Hotel.  Thanks to our friends at Rock-It Promotions for the invite – the experience was fab.
CM went sleek with a fresh blown-out look, while I went for a sky-high chignon.  We made some new blog friends and had a blast sipping champagne while getting primped.  If only this could happen before every party…maybe one day.  JD

The Beer Boutique

If you’re like us, you find The Beer Store a bit intimidating and tend to purchase brewskies at the LCBO instead.  I especially don’t like The Beer Store at Queen & Bathurst with all the crazies hanging around.  Although it does provide some good entertainment.  I’ve seen many take downs at that corner.

But The Beer Store has re-branded itself with a new retail space called The Beer Boutique.   We attended the launch of their first location in Liberty Village and we were quite impressed.  It’s a good looking store that appeals to a whole other market of beer drinkers like women, city dwellers, and people who appreciate a unique shopping experience.

The store offers a vast selection of beer products as well as regular tasting and pairing events where you can discover new brands and food that taste great with them.  It’s also self-serve so you can take your time to browse vs. lining up behind burly men ordering multiple cases of 2/4s for a hunting trip.

The store is now open for business, check it out at 120 Lynn-Williams St. in Liberty Village.  JD

Ron White Yorkdale

Our favorite shoe designer, Ron White, has expanded his Canadian empire opening a posh new store in Toronto’s Yorkdale mall.  It is evident Ron not only knows what women want in footwear but also, how to throw a great party.   Toronto’s best were present to toast the shoe connoisseur and shop his laboriously selected collection of high-end shoe designers  including his own signature collection.

As mentioned in a previous Ron White post, but significant enough to reiterate, Ron White has the best and biggest collection of Frye’s in Canada. Julie and I salivated over his summer collection and I selected my next shoe purchase (click here to check them out).  They will be mine, oh yes, they will be mine.  CM

I Only Feel A Little Bit…

So I celebrated a big birthday on the weekend.  The big 3-0!  I only feel a little bit different, but not even really.  It’s true what they say – age is just a number!  The party was at Salvador Darling on Queen West and it was the perfect place for a great night.  I don’t like dealing with lines, cover, or douche bags so this was a great option to avoid all of that.  It’s just a random small, dark bar with quirky fixtures and awesome music.  I had a blast.  Cheers to a new decade.  JD

5 Hour Brunch at Lakeview

Hello blog friends, we miss you.  This weekend we went to a pre-Juno party at The Spoke Club and had so much fun that the next day we were only capable of going for brunch.  It was one of those great brunch days that make you realize how much you love living in a bustling, vibrant city.  We sat by the window and got an amazing dose of vitamin D to the point where we were sweating and had to remove our boots and some clothes.  We were there for 5 hours.  We practically moved in.  Some of the things we consumed were the turbo breakfast, French toast, apricot beer, mimosas, lots of water, and a vanilla banana peanut butter milkshake. Delicioso.
Here are some shots from the party and brunch:

Sweet Talk

Hello Readers!  Next Thursday, March 10th, Julie and I will be heading over to Cossette agency for a women’s networking event.  The focus of the evening will be dressing for work in an attractive and economic fashion (pun intended).  Considering half of our outfit posts are shot Monday through Friday in our work-wear, this is right up our alley!  Hosted by the Women in Leadership Foundation, the event will be a great opportunity to meet new women in Toronto.  For more information click here.  Also, if you see us there, make sure you say hello!  CM

Robyn

After months  of waiting, Robyn arrived in Toronto to commence her North American tour.  Toronto boy, Diamond Rings, opened the show at that Sound Academy setting the tone for a pop-rifiic (yes, I like to make up words) night.  For those you of who don’t know (or who think of her 1995 hit, ‘Show Me Love‘), we must inform you that Robyn has taken over the pop scene.  Get out of the way Britney, (yes I said it!), Robyn is my favorite pop star…Period.  Playing everything from ‘Konichiwa Bitches’ to ‘With Every Heartbeat’ to ‘Dancing on My Own‘, Robyn killed it with her impromptu choreography in her red spandex  pants.  As Wednesday’s show was a rescheduled date from her being ill back in September, we hope she can squeeze in another Toronto date before the end of this tour – because we can’t wait to see her again.

Art Battle TO

Last night I went to The Great Hall on Queen West for a dueling Art Battle.  Art Battle is an event that takes place every five weeks and is exactly as it sounds – artists battling each other with live competitive painting. Four artists compete for 20 minutes to paint whatever their little hearts desire, and then the crowd votes on their favourite one. By the third round, the two winners from rounds 1 and 2 compete against each other for a prize of $500. Not too shabby.

At the end, all of the paintings go up for auction, and they bring out cookies for everyone. I think the cookies were a one-off random thing, but I thought it was pretty funny. It’s a really cool event, you should definitely check it out next time. Visit artbattleto.com for more info. JD

Bryan Greenberg at the MOD Club

Earlier this week I went to see Bryan Greenberg in concert at the MOD Club on College St.  He’s an actor and musician, and I’ve been a fan ever since I saw the movie Prime years ago…you know the one where he dates Uma Thurman and her therapist is his mother? (played by Meryl Streep).  If you haven’t seen it – rent it!

He also happens to be in one of my favourite HBO shows – How to Make it in America.  Another great show you should definitely check out.  I wrote about it here.

I think he’s pretty cool so I had to see him in concert.  He was awesome and talked to the crowd the whole time.  He just seemed so chill, passionate, and  adorable.  I was in lust.  Check out the video I took!  What a dreamboat.  JD

Night of the Ugly Dress, Part Three

Last weekend our friends got together for the third annual Ugly Dress Party.  We spend weeks searching out the most hideous frock we can find and then drink a bunch of cocktails in them.  I thought that Julie’s was borderline pretty.  Mine was just hideous.  It is so ugly and unflattering that I am having problems even looking at this post.  To see a full set of pics from the night including the winner of the 2010 Ugly Dress trophy, click here to our Facebook page.
