I’m proud of tonight’s dinner, so I thought I’d share. I made gnocchi from scratch! My friend JR would be proud, she taught me how to do it. We had burrata cheese to start, which is a rare find, but I found it at Grain Curd & Bean on Dundas West. Great little store if you’re looking for specialty cheeses, meats, bread, and other delectable finds. Dinner also included green beans, salad, vino, espresso, and chocolate for dessert. It was a nice way to end the weekend. Hope you had a good weekend too! JD

Wow Finally

Just saw this on my walk, College Street is finally getting a LCBO. WOW. This street has been lacking a liquor store for far too long. Glad to see they are putting that building to use, it was vacant forever. That is all. JD

This couple was loving life in their matching racoon hats. I wonder if they’re tourists trying to be all Canadiana. I also wonder if they felt me behind them taking a pic. JD

C’est l’Halloween
Since we’re too old to go trick or treating ourselves, we got together with friends last night to hand out candy. Our original plan was to scare the kids with gorilla masks but turns out they thought it was funny instead. At least we provided some entertainment.
Funny observation – hardly any kid spoke the words “trick or treat” – what’s up with that? A lot of them were shy, so I said trick or treat for them. Maybe they would feel more comfortable texting or facebooking the words. Oh how social norms have changed…let’s blame the internet.
Another funny thing – the Asian beer can collector came trick or treating. She pointed at our bottle of vino but there was still some inside so we couldn’t give her the empty. She probably makes more money returning empties than a lot of people do with their day jobs.
Here’s ugly us…..

Cuteness Is
Is This It?
I went to the beach the other day, but I think it was the last beach day. Le sigh. My friends had these cute soft beach blankets that they found at Homesense for only $20. They’re Tommy Hilfiger and come in all sorts of adorable patterns and colours. I accidentally forgot to give mine back, so maybe I’ll just keep it. Assuming they don’t read this blog post…. JD

Just Like Us
I don’t drive or own a car, but today a friend and I rented a car to go down to Niagara. While pumping gas in my 4 inch heels, it made me think of that ridiculous section of US magazine called “Stars – they’re just like us!” They grocery shop, go to Starbucks, and *gasp* they even pump their own gas!!! Can you imagine? What a crazy thing! JD

Circus In The City
Life is not a beach in Toronto these days, but it is a circus.
I went to Dimmi Trattoria for lunch yesterday and after our meal the waiter randomly brought cotton candy to the table! It wasn’t on the menu, we didn’t order it, and he didn’t even say anything, he just brought us cotton candy and walked away as if it was a normal thing to get after a meal at an Italian restaurant. It came out on a stick and I kept wondering if they had a cotton candy machine in the back – they must right? how else do you get fluffy cotton candy on a stick? I think the last time I had cotton candy I was 6 years old and Crystal Beach amusement park still existed. Does anyone remember that place? The best!

Following lunch I went to Kitchen Stuff Plus (one of my favourite stores) to pick up a carrot peeler because mine mysteriously disappeared from my kitchen. An elephant caught my eye and I had to buy him. Not a real elephant but an elephant tea pot ($10). It’s so cute, and makes me think of Dumbo. Cheers to randomness. JD

MacBook I’m in Love
The moment I was waiting for finally arrived. Last night I got my MacBook and it was love at first sight. I opened the box and squealed with excitement at its shiny newness. I literally screamed and threw my arms up in the air as if I won a prize. Some girls get excited over rings, buying a house, or having a bridal shower, but I get excited over new technology. This is a new thing for me, and next week comes the iPhone. Hands up! My new love for Apple reminds me of the commercial where the girls scream over the walk-in closet and the guys scream at the walk-in beer fridge. I love that commercial. I’d be over the moon with a giant California closet too…but that’s another story. Here’s me and my boy Mac. JD

Earth Hour
Did anyone do anything interesting during Earth Hour? I went to a friend’s house for sushi and snacks by candle light. It was pretty romantic. Last year I lit a candle for 5 minutes just for a blog post (here), but this year I stuck it out for the full hour. I liked it. People should try to do things by candle light more often. It’s just better. JD

Great Wide Open
I took these shots a few days ago on my drive up to Ellicottville, NY. It’s a cute little ski town where I go snowboarding. I showed more of it here from last season. A lot of people who don’t know me well think it’s out of character that I snowboard and hike, but that side of me is definitely true. I absolutely love the great outdoors. I believe fresh air is the cure to anything and everything. If you’re feeling down or like you’re starting to get sick – throw on your iPod and go outside for a walk. It does the trick every time. Trust. JD

In Need of Sunny Days
I do a good job of staying positive and living life to the fullest and all that stuff, but sometimes you can’t help but fall into a funk. The winter blues have gotten the best of me, and I find myself day dreaming of my next sunny escape. I’d like to go to Bali, Thailand or Croatia. I’m craving serious beach time – it’s my utopia. But for now I’ll have to look at pictures of past holidays because a trip isn’t in my near future plans. Here are a few shots that make me happy. And to everyone taking off to a beach soon, have fun and I’ll pretend I don’t hate you. JD

Happy New Year!
Hope everyone had a fabulous break. We did!! It was so great to meet up with old friends, see family, eat a whole lot more than we should have, and be away from the internet for a while. Sometimes, you just need a break right?
But now we’re back and ready to roll for 2011! Resolutions include: do more yoga, eat better, and adopt an “I don’t care” outlook when things get tough. It’s never worth it to get upset about things you can’t control, so it’s time to live in the moment more!
Here are a few shots of us on New Year’s Eve. Here’s to a New Year, Cheers!!

Home For A Rest
Like everyone else in the world, and especially at this time of year – we’re in need of home for a rest. The fall season seemed to have whipped by in a flash and it’s hard to believe tomorrow is Christmas. We’re looking forward to leaving the city and being at home, wearing no make-up, no high heels, no product in hair, and waking up to the sound of nothing – no alarm clock!!
Happy Holidays from Seven Dollar Pants and we’ll see you in the New Year!
Merry Christmas, Buon Natale, Joyeaux Noel, Seasons Greetings!!
Still the best Christmas song ever….

This is the Heartbreak Hotel
My friend and I were walking down Queen street and she stopped in front of the gorgeous heritage house across from Trinity Bellwoods Park and said “I’ve NEVER noticed that house.” I was shocked because she’s lived in the city longer than I have, and I notice it every time I walk by. Later that day, another friend came across a big storage closet at work and said “I NEVER knew this existed.” Shocked again, I thought how could this be?
Then came my turn. The next day I was walking down Queen street and I happened to look above the Hero Burger and noticed an old sign that said Hotel Heartbreak. I am very familiar with this area and I have NEVER noticed it before! What a bizarre feeling. Life is full of funny little surprises. Does that ever happen to you? JD

And for those who now have Whitney Houston’s Heartbreak Hotel in their head….hit it!

Speaking of Fall
You know how people make fun of Canadians for talking about the weather? I’m so the person who talks about the weather, but guess what? I don’t care! Tease away….
We didn’t get the Indian summer we hoped for, but we got the best Indian Fall day yesterday…not sure if that’s even a term. In any case, I was loving every minute of the 18 degree weather, as I strolled in my trench coat and thin leggings.
I had to stop to capture the trees on my walk through Trinity Bellwoods Park. So pretty. I went walking for a good hour and broke into a mini sweat by the end of it. Let’s hear it for freakishly warm weather days when it’s not supposed to be warm! Giddy-up. JD

I Heart Betty
“Only boring people are bored” — Betty Draper
Betty & Don Draper in Rome – Mad Men Season 3
If you didn’t already know – I am OBSESSED with the show Mad Men and Betty Draper in particular. I seriously cannot get enough of this show. Season 4 just started and my lack of owning a TV has put me in a little state of panic because I don’t want to get behind. I’m hoping I can find the episodes online — going to check that out soon. In any case, if you haven’t tuned into Mad Men yet – what are you waiting for? I think January Jones (who plays Betty Draper) is SO pretty. Did you know she dated Ashton Kutcher and he said she’d never make it as an actor? He advised her to quit but that just pushed to keep going. TAKE THAT ASHTON!! Revenge is sweet. JD
Golden Girls
I spotted these two adorable old women in Brussels the other day and had to snap a photo. I have been doing much of the same – sitting outside, drinking raspberry beer, getting into long-winded chats with a dear friend (minus the smoking). Good friends are ridiculously priceless. JD

We No Speak Americano
There are always songs of summer in every country, but in Europe they take it to a whole other level. They just love to play one specific song over and over and OVER again on until it’s the only song of the summer. You’ll hear it in bars, grocery stores, on the street, and at restaurants. It’s hilarious and slightly annoying, but you can’t help but love it. This summer it’s We No Speak Americano by Yolanda Be Cool. I have heard this song a bajillion times over the past couple of weeks and have grown to LOVE it. Play it and shimmy in your seat. JD
