Where has this week gone?!? 2012 seems to be flying at warp speed these days. It’s all good in the hood. I’ve been busy working and playing in the snow. This is my most recent hat purchase from The Hudson’s Bay Company, and as my mom pointed out – it looks like a Canadian Guard hat. It really does, see here.

I’m also wearing a yellow silk shirt from Forever 21, Lace vest from H&M, Domino jeans, and my leopard print boots from Top Shop. Enjoy your weekend!! JD

Today’s outfit

Someone told me they liked my vintage outfit today. I took it as a compliment but actually none of it is vintage. This skirt is a new purchase from Durumi and Chocolate Shoes – a cute little store on Queen West. A new fave of mine. Polka dot blouse is from Winners; vest is from H&M; silk scarf is by Dion Neckwear; and my leopard boots are from Top Shop. Cheers! JD

I’m boiling in the Mayan Riviera right now and loving it. I have an obsession with buying bikinis and this one is my latest. It’s from Ardene and it was only $20. I would never go in that store because it’s for teens but I saw it in the window and thought I’d give it a try. But more importantly, how nice does the ocean look? Love! JD

In The Mood For A Snood

My friend made me this amazing snood for Christmas. It’s so soft and lux I just love it. You can really tell the difference between something hand-made and store-bought. I finally found this knit headband I was looking for from ASOS.

The rest of the pictures are from my home town of Port Colborne. One of my favourite things to do when I’m home for a visit is go for a stroll along Lake Erie – it’s really pretty.

BTW – please ignore the butterfly clip on the top of my head. Sometimes I find random hair tools in my old drawers and put them to use for no reason. JD

This is the marina I used to work at during the summers of my university years. Best job ever.

I’m really into the peter pan collar trend. I bought this dress because I liked the crochet collar and I’m on the hunt for removeable collars that I can add to other outfits. My dress and sunglasses are from Forever 21, jacket and shoes are from Winners. The cupcakes I’m eating are from The Wedding Cake Shoppe on College. They were delicious. JD

p.s – I’m wearing sunglasses inside because I thought I had tired eyes.

Never Say Never

I’m not an animal print kind of gal. I appreciate it and like it on others, but I usually feel like an imposter when I try animal print pieces….until I bought these leopard print boots from Top Shop. I got interested in leopard print footwear from seeing them styled different ways on the fashion blogs I look at. I love the splash of colour on my feet. They’re fun to wear! JD

Grand Electric

If you’re looking for a dope new restaurant to try – you should definitely check out Grand Electric in Parkdale (1330 Queen St. W). I went there on the weekend and loved it. It’s a tiny little spot with good vibes, and most importantly mouth-watering delicious food. It’s tapas style Mexican and we tried a little bit of everything, but not everything so I’ll have to go back. We had tuna ceviche, shrimp tacos, Baja fish tacos, chicken, beef cheek and pork belly tacos, and a few more little plates. The menu is on the chalk board, and items are around $3 – $8. I can’t wait to go back….I’m hungry again. JD

What to wear this holiday season

We’re in the thick of the holiday season and with every party or festive get-together, comes the most frequently asked question, “What should I wear?” Instead of wasting time staring into your closet and feeling helpless, here are five key items to help boost your look and get you into the holiday spirit.

Fur Collar
Adding a fur or faux fur collar to a coat or dress is a great way to look and feel like a classic Hollywood beauty. Fur collars are everywhere this season in vintage and mainstream stores and shouldn’t cost you more than $50. A two-tone brown, black or white collar will go with practically anything. Bonus – it will keep you warm while looking chic.

Leopard Shoes
Leopard shoes are all the rage and the ultimate standout piece to your party look. The slip-on flat leopard shoe from Aldo is a great choice, or the heeled leopard ankle boot from Top Shop. Pair your leopard shoes with black skinny pants that are tight around the ankle to show off your fun feet.

Velvet Shorts
A pair of velvet shorts in a red wine or dark green colour will give off a trendy luxurious look. Treat them the same way you would a skirt – pair velvet shorts with tights, a feminine blouse, a blazer and heels. It’s a great way to mix things up from the ordinary.

Sequin Top
Anything sequin is a foolproof way to feel instant glam and get into party mode. A chic black or colourful sequin tank or sleeved top will add a pretty shine to your look. Let the sequin top be your standout piece and pair it will tight jeans, black pants or a dark coloured circle skirt.

Long Tight Skirt
Long and mid-length skirts have made a significant return and are perfect for a night out on the town. Wear a long tight skirt with a free flowing top or blouse and a pair heels. Don’t forget to wear this trend with confidence and it will look amazing.

Tip: don’t wear these items all at once; it won’t work! All items mentioned are standout pieces that work on their own. Treat each one as an anchor piece and build your wardrobe around them. JD

Rain Sucks

When it’s rainy, dark and gloomy everyone is grumpy. But it doesn’t have to suck, it’s all how you perceive it. My favourite making the most of rain memory is running through a rain storm in Amsterdam with three friends. I was wearing a dress and sandals, my hair was drenched and I ran and smiled through the cobblestone streets until we reached the nearest pub. I suppose it was amazing because I was on vacation in Amsterdam, but still.
Yesterday I came across a beautiful picture of a gloomy day that made me think of that memory. It was shot by a 19-year-old photographer named Remi. His stuff is dope. I’m bringing back the word dope btw. I just have to share it….

Toronto’s Booming Vintage Scene

I love this video the BBC did on Toronto’s competitive vintage scene. It’s true, we have so many unique and amazing vintage stores that make this city a great one. Every store has a different vibe and every item has a story. It’s like going into Mr. Dress-up’s tickle trunk every time you step into another store. No matter how old I get, I don’t think I’ll ever get over the thrill of the find.

Comfortably Dressed Up

Whenever I’m asked how to define my style, I say “comfortably dressed up.” This outfit is a perfect example of that. It’s dressy because I’m wearing a dress and mink collar, but comfortable with wool tights and flat boots.
I bought this dress at H&M and it’s another versatile piece that can be worn year round with the right accessories.

Versatile Skylark

I bought this floral top at an amazing store called Skylark on Abbot Kinney Blvd in Venice. If I owned a store, it would be very much like this one. It’s part vintage, part local and established designers and exactly my kind of style. I could have bought everything in there. I’ve worn this top with jeans, jean shorts, green cargos, grey harem pants, and now with my yellow skirt. I love buying something so versatile. My skirt and purse are from Forever 21, belt and necklace are vintage, and lace-up heels are Cole Haan. JD

I bought this floral top from Forever 21 recently, and I like how it’s in a category on its own. It’s not a blazer, not a cardigan, not a silk boyfriend shirt – it’s kind of kimono-esque, but not fully. It’s a good piece to dress things up.
I paired it with my long skirt from H&M, crop top from American Apparel, mink collar from 69 Vintage, and vintage gold accessories. JD
