Blue Jean Baby

…LA lady. Seamstress for the band. Love that song and especially this scene from my favourite movie. Must re-watch soon. I didn’t learn my lesson with the heat wave and decided to wear my white jeans yet again!  Sometimes I get on a kick and wear the same things over and over.

Jeans are from Joe Fresh, top is an exceptional find from Value Village – it’s vintage Jacob! the tag looks like it could date back to 1990.  Sweetness.  Jean jacket is also a stellar find from Value Village – Vintage Levi’s!  I can’t take credit for it though, it was a gift from my BFF.  My favourite sky high heels are from Winners, belt is from a vintage shop, and my necklace is from Anthropologie.

Red Checker

Don’t ask me why I bundled up with a blazer and dress shirt on a day hotter than Kenya.  Actually I ditched the blazer and unbuttoned the top button, but still – it was a bit ridiculous.  I saw my white jeans sitting on a pile of jeans and got the urge to wear them. My jeans are from Joe Fresh ($29), red checker top is from Value Village, blazer is from Zara, shoes are from Winners, and purse is from Cole Haan.  New summer rule for me – no. more. pants!  JD

Inspired By Festival Season

Yesterday I read an article about (music) festival attire in Fashion magazine and the image of Kate Moss wearing a vest and jean shorts with hunter wellies re-struck a cord.  I remember when that shot surfaced and I loved it.  Kate Moss truly is THE ultimate trend setter of our generation.  I pulled out my black vest from H&M and paired it with my Levi’s cut-offs, a silver necklace, and a pair of combat boots for my version of Kate’s look.  I also layered my lace body suit from American Apparel beneath it and added a belt from Joe Fresh.  Looking forward to the next concert I go to this summer!

What to Pack: Traveling Shoes

In the past two days, two people asked me for advice on what to pack for a city vacation.  Having been in the midst of making my own packing lists for upcoming trips, I was excited to jump on the suggestion train.  I’ll start with footwear for this post.  I’m a firm believer that you have to be comfortable – especially when traveling, but you also want to look stylish.  Every time I go on a trip my Dad asks his famous question “did you pack your running shoes?”  I always respond with “no Dad, I have to look good.”  I can’t be seen wearing my Nike Airs with a skirt.  Can you imagine? The very thought makes me shudder.  So what shoes should you pack for a vacation?

I suggest packing canvas lace-up shoes in white or black, a pair of Bob’s in red or navy for a colour option, leather sandals with a tiny wedge for dressing up a bit, and a pair of fun flip-flops, in case you take a day trip to the city beach.  You can pack your runners if you plan to go running but for the city, opt for any of these comfortable options…

Lacoste sandal jelly thong – better than the standard shape of a flip flop, comfortable, and available in fun colours

Bob’s soft canvas slip on flats by Skechers $38 – feels like slippers, and Tom’s but half the price

White canvas shoes with laces removed.  These can be found anywhere from Ardene to H&M, Joe Fresh, and Payless. You shouldn’t pay more than $20

ShoeMint leather sandals with a tiny wedge – perfect for walking around and for a night out on the town

I love a good bun, it always does the trick when I’m having a lazy hair day (the sock bun continually saves my life).
DIY arm swag is my vice.
I’m grumpy in the morning if I don’t get my Capital Espresso.
I wear boots all the time, no matter what season – they are my go to.
My real name is Jennifer, people like to call me Jenny from the block.

Pink Lady

Speaking of leopard print tights (in my previous post), here I am wearing them again with a charcoal coloured angle cut skirt from Zara and bright pink blazer from Zara as well.  Boots are from Top Shop, and I finished the look off with a vintage belt and necklace.
My sunglasses are a new and exciting addition to my eyewear collection.  I have never owned proper sunglasses because I could never decide what to get, and I’ve always been too afraid of breaking or losing them.  This pair is from an AMAZING eyewear store called Opticianado located in the Junction.  They specialize in iconic unused vintage eyewear (mine), as well as contemporary independent designers. They have such a unique selection that definitely stands out from all the others.  Check it out at 2919 Dundas St. W.  JD

The Floral Blazer

The floral blazer is one of my top must haves for the spring season.  I was on the hunt for the perfect floral blazer for quite some time and finally approved of this one the moment I saw it on Aritzia’s website.  It was a birthday gift to myself.  I paired it with my Levi’s cut offs, grey tights from Joe Fresh, and a basic white t-shirt from Zara.  Cole Haan shoes and a black vintage purse complete the look.  I hope to get a lot of wear out of this one.  JD

Singing In The Hail

I had planned a blog shoot on Sunday and wasn’t going to let a little rain or hail stop me.  It was a bit ridiculous and cold, but it still worked!  I always tend to wear this knit dress when it rains, I don’t know why, but it’s just my go-to rain dress.  It’s from Joe Fresh and it’s still in excellent condition despite how many times I’ve worn it. Solid purchase.
My denim shirt and trench coat are from Zara, weather proof boots are from Cole Haan, and my favourite umbrella is by Fulton.  It reminds me of walks home from elementary school, I had one just like it.  JD

Lumberjacket

Spent the day strolling the ocean in sunny BC!  These pictures were taken in Kitsilano beach and I definitely look like a lumberjack.  Denim shirt from Zara, puffy vest from Joe Fresh, and plaid jacket from Aritzia. It’s not as warm as the heat wave in Toronto, but the sight of mountains makes up for it.  Enjoy your weekend!  JD

Brunello Cucinelli Inspired

One of my all time favourite designers is Brunello Cucinelli.  He’s from Italy and I had the opportunity of meeting him a few years ago.  Brunello began his collection in the 1970s with coloured cashmere sweaters and now he has a full men’s and women’s collections sold in boutiques and high-end retailers across the world.
The feel of the fabrics are true luxury and the look is effortless European cool.  Some say it’s a European version of Ralph Lauren, and I can see that, but it’s better. I forgot to mention, it costs a fortune!!
I was inspired to dress in my best Brunello on a budget look the other day and here’s what I came up with. Tan pants from Aritza, a white dress shirt, navy blazer from Zara, a grey scarf from H&M, and my all-time favourite vest from Joe Fresh. On sale now for $10 (no joke).  I also wore lace-up booties from Spring, my vintage Coach bag, and my old man hat from Kensington Market.  Voila!  JD

Silky Smooth Pleats

This pleated skirt from Zara is delicate and silky smooth.  I love the colours and pattern.  I paired it with my silky smooth boyfriend shirt from Joe Fresh, a wardrobe staple!  Wool tights are from Winners, booties are by Cole Haan, and my parka is an old favourite by Talula Babaton that I got at Artizia many moons ago.  Head band is from H&M.  Enjoy your coffee break today.  JD

Red Check & Tangerine

Have you noticed it’s difficult to find a cheerful sweater?  Take a look around and you’ll notice every sweater in almost every store is black or grey, or some variation of black and grey combined.  Why is that?  Don’t get me wrong, I adore grey sweaters, but I think it’s necessary to inject some colour into our lives!

So when I saw this tangerine  number at Joe Fresh, I had to get it.   It was on sale, and it made me smile.  I layered a vintage red check shirt underneath (from Bungalow in Kensington Market), and threw on my Rich and Skinny jeans.  Boots are H&M and all my accessories are a mix of new and old in true JD style.

Comfortably Dressed Up

Whenever I’m asked how to define my style, I say “comfortably dressed up.”  This outfit is a perfect example of that.  It’s dressy because I’m wearing a dress and mink collar, but comfortable with wool tights and flat boots.
I bought this dress at H&M and it’s another versatile piece that can be worn year round with the right accessories.

The rest of my outfit…
Green anorak jacket – M for Mendocino
Beret – Joe Fresh
Mink collar – 69 Vintage
Purse – Vintage Coach
Tights – Winners
Boots – Cole Haan

Polka Dot Explosion

This look was inspired by a picture I saw of Alexa Chung.  She didn’t have all the polka dots going on, but it was the same idea – camel colour cardigan, jean shorts and tights.  I love finding a picture of an outfit I dig and realizing I have all similar pieces in my closet.  If you want a different feel to your weekend wear, switch to jean shorts and tights instead of wearing jeans all the time.  Actually, I used to hate this look but it grew on me.  It’s fun to try different things with your wardrobe, so why not?

Outfit details:
Cut-off jean shorts – Levi’s
Maroon belt – Joe Fresh
Polka dot top – Winners
Cardigan – Forever 21
Lace-up booties – Cole Haan
Fur collar – taken from my parka
Tights – H&M
Hat – Goorin Bros.
Purse – Vintage

Cape Weather And A Buttery Bag

We’ve been lucky to have fall jacket weather this season.  My favourite.  Sometimes fall is just as cold as winter and I feel like I wear my winter coat for 8 months.  Thank you nature for the mildness.
I’ve been wearing my navy cape a lot and my buttery leather bag.  This jacket was my mom’s maternity cape that she wore when she was pregnant with me 30 years ago.  I like the shape of it and how it hangs over my non-pregnant body.  I added the fur collar that I took from one of my parkas.

Other items:
Headband and Boots – H&M
Harem pants – Forever 21
Purple gloves – Joe Fresh
Bag – Cole Haan

Joe Fresh Spring 2012

We love Joe.  All of our readers know that.  We’re stoked about the new downtown store at Queen & Portland and can’t wait for Spring to pick up some of these pieces.  The Joe Fresh runway show is always a highlight at LG Fashion Week, and here are our favorite looks from the runway.

Swap Party Crop Top

I went to a clothing swap party a few weeks ago and got this vintage crop top that I’ve been loving.  It’s perfectly worked in and just plain rad. There are a lot of layers going on with this outfit, so I’ll break it down head to toe…

Vintage aviators – my grandfather’s from the 70s
Silk top – Joe Fresh
Army green jacket – Esprit (from one hundred years ago)
Domino jeans – gifted
Vintage gold belt – Print Fine Vintage (College St.)
Vintage coach purse – randomly found at a College St. pop-up sale for $5

School Bakery & Cafe

I had an awesome and delicious dinner at School Bakery & Cafe the other day thanks to the girls from HUG (The Hip & Urban Girl’s Guide).  They threw their 1 year blog birthday party there and gave dinner for 2 gift cards to those who attended.  Pretty great gift!

I like Liberty Village but I don’t live there, so it’s easy to forget that they have great spots worth going to.  School Bakery & Cafe is definitely one of those spots.  It’s cute, the menu is delicious, and they have a patio that gives off a laid back vibe.

My date and I tried the calamari, jerk shrimp and pineapple, fish tacos, the bahme hang bowl, and the flat n’ chewy ice cream sandwich for desert.  WOW.  That was an amazing dessert.  We decided to walk all the way home to burn some of it off.

They have an amazing brunch menu too.  Check it out in Liberty Village at 70 Fraser St.  You won’t be disappointed.  JD

Straw hat – Joe Fresh ($10)

Sugar Beach

We’ve been loving the scorching heat that’s graced us this month, but if you live downtown, you know that finding a place to soak up the sun can be difficult.  Toronto definitely has great outdoor spaces – you just have to branch out a bit.  If you’re unfamiliar with Toronto’s beaches, you should check out the Beach City guide from NOW magazine.

One great place to start is Sugar Beach – it’s the whimsical park located at the foot of Lower Jarvis, beside the Redpath sugar factory (hence, Sugar beach).  Some people call it a “fake beach” because you can’t actually go in the water, but they have eye-catching pink umbrellas and Muskoka chairs!  Other perks – they have a splash pad near by and Joe Fresh is a quick 1 minute walk away if you feel like shopping.  It’s a great little escape that you don’t have to go too far for.  JD

Outfit details:
Striped tunic – Joe Fresh ($24)
Straw hat – Kensington Market ($10)
Beach bag – Wal-Mart ($7)
Sunglasses – Winners ($12)

Baby I’m Burning

I wanted to wear my Joe Fresh maxi dress to work yesterday, but the racer back isn’t office friendly, and it was far too hot for a blazer.  Solution – I threw on my favourite billowy sheer top from H&M.  I kept my top on in the office and ditched it the second I walked outside.

I paired this look with vintage gold accessories and clogs from Banana Republic ($23).  Sunglasses are by Cheap Monday and as my Dad pointed out – they look like John Lennon sunglasses.  I’m really feeling the circular frames this season.  What about you, have you changed up the shape of your eye wear?  JD

Cape Town in Navy

This is my mom’s maternity cape that she wore while she was pregnant with me.  I was a giant baby by the way, coming in at 9 lbs 4 oz…and 1 month overdue.  I love fat babies…maybe I knew I wanted to be one before coming out.

I added this cape to my coat collection because I was inspired by the capes at American Apparel.  I noticed them in the window and suddenly remembered something similar in my mom’s closet.  I called in a panic like I always do when I think something has been given away. It went something like this…

Me: “Mom? Do you still have that cape? Please don’t say you gave it away.”
Mom: “I might have given it to so and so’s daughter when she was pregnant, but it might still be here, let me check.”
Me: “No! you can’t give stuff like that away!”
Mom: “You’re in luck, it’s still in the closet.”

These types of conversations take place every few weeks.  Last week I called asking about my leather backpack that came straight from Italy and the response was “we gave it to a girl in Cuba who really wanted it” – I couldn’t be mad at that one, but damn, kinda wish I still had it.

Also shown:
Domino jeggings ($50) from Lavish and Squalor
Steve Madden espadrilles ($50) Winners
Joe Fresh scarf $16
Angelo Damiano aviators (gifted) aka my grandfather’s sunglasses

Sand Blast

I’m really liking my new sand coloured jacket from H&M ($69). It’s part cotton and part leather (leather parts include shoulders, elbow patches and around the wrists). I think it will be a good alternative to my black moto jacket this summer.

I paired it with pleated pants from Zara, burgundy belt from Joe Fresh, and striped top from Simons in Montreal. Love that store. Can’t wait till it gets to Toronto! JD

Bun Master

While washing my face yesterday morning, I didn’t mind the giant bun and hairband look I had going on so I decided to stick with the hair do but make it a little more polished for work.

Because my hair was so big, I decided to wear something tame.  I wore my classic white button down shirt by Hugo Boss with my Joe Fresh paper bag princess skirt, aka my staple piece for Spring/Summer. I’m quite happy to finally start wearing it!

Also shown: headband from Winners, lace-up booties from Spring, trench coat from Zara. JD

Spring Weekend Wear

This is my ‘strolling the city’ weekend look. I pieced together something warm, but not too warm, that married comfort and style. Comfort is key in my world.

Outfit details:
Second Denim Yoga Jeans – Shop Girls Gallery Boutique ($110)
Cropped sweater – H&M ($24)
Army inspired jacket – Esprit ($45)
Oxford shoes – Joe Fresh ($69)
Vintage gold belt – Print Fine Vintage ($10)
Neckerchief – gift from my Mamma

P.S – thank god for Yoga jeans – these pups allow me to be comfortable and still look stylish. Perfect for days I can’t handle wearing tight clothing. I need to get another pair in black or white or maybe every shade possible. JD
