Little Green Dress

I think it’s safe to say this green dress is ‘vintage’ H&M.  I purchased it 6 years ago. WOW.  I still like it.   I’ve worn it dressed-up with tanned legs and black booties, dressed down over leggings and flats, and in between with tights and a cardigan.
I like the look of over the knee socks but only with tights underneath.  I opted for my fish net stockings, but I also like the look with cream coloured tights.  Socks are from American Apparel, booties are from Spring and chambray shirt is from Zara.  Cheers to busting out old finds.  JD

Brunello Cucinelli Inspired

One of my all time favourite designers is Brunello Cucinelli.  He’s from Italy and I had the opportunity of meeting him a few years ago.  Brunello began his collection in the 1970s with coloured cashmere sweaters and now he has a full men’s and women’s collections sold in boutiques and high-end retailers across the world.
The feel of the fabrics are true luxury and the look is effortless European cool.  Some say it’s a European version of Ralph Lauren, and I can see that, but it’s better. I forgot to mention, it costs a fortune!!
I was inspired to dress in my best Brunello on a budget look the other day and here’s what I came up with. Tan pants from Aritza, a white dress shirt, navy blazer from Zara, a grey scarf from H&M, and my all-time favourite vest from Joe Fresh. On sale now for $10 (no joke).  I also wore lace-up booties from Spring, my vintage Coach bag, and my old man hat from Kensington Market.  Voila!  JD

No Jacket Required

I’m LOVING this crazy warm weather.  I can’t believe it’s March and I’ve been leaving the house sans jacket.  Even this outfit had too many layers for our rising temps.
I’m wearing a vintage skirt I picked up in Belgium for 4 Euro, layered with a denim shirt from Zara, cropped sweater from H&M, cream tights, and my vintage Coach bag ($5).  Booties are from Spring.  Hope you’re making the most of this weather, enjoy it while it’s here.  JD

The Ritz Life

After a few days spent surfing in San Diego, I headed back to LA.  In a weird twist of plans, I ended up staying at The Ritz Carlton Marina Del Ray for the rest of my trip.  It was BEYOND bliss!  I took advantage of the lovely pool, ultra soothing hot tub, delicious watermelon water, and the gorgeous surrounding views.  It really is top-notch service that makes all the difference.  The staff at The Ritz were on their game at any given moment.  It was the. best.

I didn’t wear much other than a bathing suit for most of the time, but I decided to pseudo dress-up for this photo.  I wore my purple convertible dress from American Apparel, flowing top from H&M, floppy hat from Urban Outfitters, sunglasses from Forever 21, and sandals from Spring.

On crazy, overwhelming days, I’m going to think back to the moments I spent floating on my back, staring at the palm trees and the moon while night swimming.  Great memories.  JD

Bun Master

While washing my face yesterday morning, I didn’t mind the giant bun and hairband look I had going on so I decided to stick with the hair do but make it a little more polished for work.

Because my hair was so big, I decided to wear something tame.  I wore my classic white button down shirt by Hugo Boss with my Joe Fresh paper bag princess skirt, aka my staple piece for Spring/Summer. I’m quite happy to finally start wearing it!

Also shown: headband from Winners, lace-up booties from Spring, trench coat from Zara. JD

Same Look, Two Ways

There’s nothing wrong with wearing the same outfit over and over. Sure it can get tedious, but if you find little ways to switch things up it won’t feel so monotonous….and then you’ll have more to splurge on something bigger….like that trip to Paris or Stockholm you’ve been day dreaming about.

I was loving my grey H&M cropped sweater so much I bought it in cream as well. Here’s the same outfit twice with a few minor adjustments.
* Black booties (Spring $29) instead of brown boots
* Maroon belt (Joe Fresh $14) instead of brown belt
* Vintage silk shirt in navy(Stylist yard sale $5)
* Skinny wool pants (Zara $52)
* Hair down vs. hair up changes it too

What city would you fly off to today if money wasn’t an issue? Pick just one! JD

Gift of Gold

Last Wednesday I had the pleasure of seeing The Nutcracker for the first time.  It was also my first visit to Toronto’s Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts.  I am so behind on these things!  I wanted look somewhat festive without draping myself in red and gold.  I picked up this gold skirt for $30 at The Gap’s holiday event and paired it with my American Apparel 3D floral mesh jumper.

Rest of my outfit:

Jacket: Club Monaco
Booties: Spring
Headband: Forever 21
Tights: Hue

Whip Cream and Cozy

I’m not a coffee drinker but I do like a hot beverage once in a while, so I popped by Starbucks for a hot chocolate with whip cream on top.   I felt all cozy and warm, until I had to remove my jacket for an outfit pic!  I was wearing something too skimpy to brave the cold, so I borrowed CM’s awesome sweater from American Eagle Outfitters (Reg. $70 on sale for $30).  I really love it – the cream colour brightened my day.

If you are on the hunt for affordable sweaters, I saw a bunch at M for Mendocino the other day. They had a lot of options and a lot of sales!

I’m also wearing: Joe Fresh distressed jeans $29; grey circle scarf from Spring $16; and lace-up booties from Spring $29.  JD

Lace Top Tight Pants

I popped by The Bay on Queen last week and found this lace top by Vero Moda on sale for $20. Score!  I love Vero Moda – they always have nice stuff.  I bought an amazing dress as well that I’ll show you soon.

My pants and belt are from Zara ($59), and  I’m happy to tell you that Zara on Bloor is finally open after 5 months of renovations.  That was a long wait.  They changed the floors, shelving, and light fixtures.  That’s it! I thought they were building another floor at that rate.

My lace-up booties are from Spring shoes, and cashmere scarf is by Arnold Brant.  Hope you are bundled up today, it’s getting so cold!  It’s going to be difficult to take outfit photos outside soon.  Not sure what we’re gonna do!  JD

Reunited

I found this H&M sweater in a random closet at my Mother’s house.  It was a Eureka moment!  How could I have let it sit for four years in bag on the floor of a closet?  Do you ever have those moments where a piece of clothing is discovered after years of hiding?.  It closely compares to a great vintage find.  Since my rediscovery last week, I have worn this sweater way too many times (laundry!)  We have reunited… and it feels so good.

Overcoat – Club Monaco
Jean Shorts – H&M
Tights – Hue
T-Shirt – Gap
Booties - Spring
Belt – H&M
Sunglasses – Joe Fresh
Lipstick – Nars Jungle Red

Sunday Lazy Sunday

What is better than a lazy Sunday?  The clothing that lazy Sunday allows.  I enjoyed brunch at Fire On The East Side with friends and then set off to do some shopping at The Bay.  My sister had still not seen The Room so we went for a browse seeing oh so many amazing things for fall.  Unfortunately I did not buy anything that day – I seemed to be conscious of my bank account.  That is so unlike me.  Here I am wearing my $39 Joe Fresh silk tunic, $30 Zara sweater, $10 Costa Blanca leggings and my go to $70 moto boots from Spring.  CM

Nice n’ Easy Outfit

Yesterday was a jeans, silk shirt, and blazer kind of day.  A nice and easy look I’d say.  My jeans and silk top are from Joe Fresh; blazer and trench coat are from Zara; striped scarf is from H&M, and my cognac booties are from Spring.  Yes, I have the exact same pair in black.  I’m so not that person who buys the same item in different colours, but I made an exception for these booties because I knew they would become my shoe of choice and I’d be wearing them all the time.
The giant forest green bag is from Joe Fresh too, but it’s actually CM’s — I was teasing her on how big it is…I can practically fit into it.  Ok that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but a small child could fit into it.  I think it would make a chic gym bag.  What are you wearing now that the weather has turned chilly?  Who else is peeved that we didn’t get an Indian summer? I can see the show of hands from here.  JD

Playing With Patterns

Sometimes I get a bit restless with pairing all my outfits with a solid colour top, so I decided to play with patterns with this one.  At first I wasn’t sure if it looked acceptable, but you can mix patterns as long as the colour scheme is the same, so this does work.
My floral skirt by Kensie was an unexpected find from Liquidation World for $10.  I wore it another way here.  I paired it with a polka dot top that I took from my Mom’s closet (also worn here).  My army green Esprit jacket was purchased probably 7 years ago and I’m glad I’ve held on to it!  This circle scarf is from Spring ($14); horizontal striped tights are from H&M; and my shoes are my favourite black booties from Spring.  JD

The Cropped Peg Pant

There’s no escaping the cropped pant look, at least in my world there isn’t.  I’ve loved this style pant for a long time and it just keeps growing on me.  I’m on the lookout for a black pair, and faded army green pair.  Aritzia and American Apparel have good options, but I’m waiting for the Zara on Bloor to open  back up because I’m sure I’ll find them there.  It blows my mind that Zara on Bloor would shut down for what’s going on FOUR months to do renovations.  I bet you ten bucks it will look exactly the same.  Anxiously awaiting.
These pants are from Zara (pre-construction) and my top and belt are from Joe Fresh.  My lace-up booties are from Spring.  Happy pant shopping! JD

Forever 21 Onesie

I found this versatile onesie at Forever 21 in NYC last fall while CM and I were power shopping on Broadway.  We both agreed we wouldn’t waste precious New York time in chain stores that we already have access to, but Forever 21 was the only exception because it’s just so much better in the states.  I went to the one at Yonge and Dundas square the other day and there was NOTHING good!  Anyway I like that this onesie is strapless, pleated and balloons at the ankle.  I can wear it conservatively with a blazer like so, or in a dressy way sans blazer.  I paired it with my grey blazer from Zara, lace-up booties from Spring, and a collection of vintage necklaces from my mammy and grandmammy.  My shiny yellow clutch is from the Gap and was a gift from my cousin who inspired our blog name – see story here.  I’ve been getting a lot of compliments on my double ring, or brass knuckles as I like to refer to it as.  Surprisingly it’s from Costa Blanca ($9), and my dad-style watch is by Casio found in Paris.

Friday Night Whites

So you would think that considering mine and Julie’s chain of events last Friday night that I would wear something that would be suitable for something like a marathon? That was not the case.  I have been envious of this look by Kate Bosworth and have been waiting to interpret it my way the entire summer.   I found this cream dress at H&M for $40.  (Ladies there is also a black version with coloured polka-dots still on the racks.)  I paired it with my red pumps from Spring (gift from Mom) and Nars lipstick in Jungle Red.  Earring are from Banana Republic for $8 and my purse is a great Value Village find that I picked up in Burlington.  It was a VV Boutique splurge for $14.   CM

Woman in a White Dress

Every once in a while, you just have to get on a train with your girlfriends and take is as far as it will take you.  In this case, it was the Go Train and we took it to Niagara Falls to celebrate my friend and bride-to-be Erin’s bachelorette party.  We toured five Niagara-On-The-Lake wineries (yes five!) and headed back to the hotel to continue our party.  We stayed at the Hilton and guess who we saw?  Pink! She was there with her handsome husband Carey Hart who was opening up another one of his Hart & Huntington tattoo parlors.  We traveled across the street to Dragonfly and can confirm what EVERYONE told us prior to our travels – it’s horrible!  Seriously, never, ever go there.  Anyhow, this is what I wore for my night out.  H&M kinda exploded all over me but how could I resist?  When I saw this picture of Miss Salma Hayek and spotted this $30 dress, there was no stopping me.  Dress, belt and headband all from from H&M total $46.  My Shoes were an early birthday gift from my Mom.  They are from Spring.  CM

Country Living

Whenever I travel to a new place, my motto is always “When in Rome!”  I like to hang out with the locals, do the things they do, eat the foods they eat, go to city festivals, and learn about cultural differences.  I find it fascinating.  On this particular day in Gent, my Belgian friends took me to the countryside for a traditional “schieting” – which translates to “shooting. “  It’s a casual celebration that takes place just days before a couple gets married.  Friends and family gather together in the countryside and shoot off explosives to let the town know they are getting married. The noise is LOUD and scary but I didn’t hesitate when the giant sledge-hammer was passed over to me. It was fun!  Coincidentally my outfit was fit for a country gal -  I wore my Levis 501 cut-off jean shorts with a floral top I bought in Paris for 14 euro. My fringe sandals are from Spring shoes. Take It Easy

After a long and grueling apartment move this weekend, I escaped from the city to the quiet and peaceful Lake Erie in Niagara. I didn’t pack properly but luckily I had some random old clothes lying around my parents house and managed to piece an outfit together. My top is from Winners and I think it’s actually supposed to be a skirt. I found it years ago for $3 and only got a few wears out of it, but that’s fine by me because it was basically the cost of a chocolate bar! My white shorts are from Winners too. They used to be cigarette pants but I cut them into shorts. Fringe sandals are from Spring shoes and my sunglasses were my grandpa’s. I love the sun and the lake. JD

Blush Baby

We took a stroll through the beautiful U of T campus for these shots and got stuck in a tunnel of wind under the archway. I wore my blush tone skirt from H&M and paired it with this shirt dress top also from H&M. I wore it once as a dress here but I think I like it as a top better now. My moto-inspired jacket is from H&M too! Wow 3 items from one store…didn’t do that on purpose. Lace-up booties are from Spring shoes ($29) and chain necklaces are from my mom and grandma’s collections. Oh and I don’t know if you can see the buttons on my sleeves but those are button covers I got at a thrift store in Port Colborne. Gotta love random finds. JD

The wind crept up on me!

Blue On Blue

Sometimes I like wearing a full outfit of the same colour. I found this top at a vintage yard sale off Queen street – it was just $5! My pants are from Zara, belt is from a clothing swap party and lace-up booties are from Spring shoes. Hope you are enjoying this weather! JD

Red Lemon

The colour combination of red and yellow is a bit bold…kind of like ketchup and mustard. I normally wouldn’t marry the two but I was inspired by an outfit I saw in Anthropologie’s look book (which is always amazing by the way). It’s liberating to wear an outfit that doesn’t contain any trace of black or grey.

I bought this top from Winners a while back and it’s one of those tops that I don’t wear often, but I know better than to get rid of it. This yellow skirt is from Zara and I really like the crisp shape – it instantly gives a polished look. My belt is from the GAP and it’s one of my all time favourites. Vintage sunglasses were my grandfather’s, and my jazz booties are from Spring shoes. Wearing this outfit has got me in the mood for street meat! For those of you that don’t know, Toronto is home to countless hot dog stands throughout the city and the dogs are amazing! I’ll let you know how my first dog of the season is….excited for lunch. Happy summer days ahead! JD

PS – here is just one of the many street meat hubs in the city. I wonder how many there actually are….

Sealion Woman Dressed in Floral

It was incredibly nice out yesterday that we had to find some shade to take these pictures because it was so bright! I love this weather!!!! I scored this dress from H&M for just $19! I think it will be a great summer staple. I paired it with lace floral tights from Aldo, my charm necklace ($7) and jazz booties ($29) from Spring shoes. My sunglasses ($20)are from Red Pegasus on College street. Next time I’m going to wear this dress with bare legs, open toe brown shoes, and a brown belt. The weather man says it’s supposed to be 28 degrees today!! I’m going to take a lap around the park on my lunch break. Enjoy your day! JD

Toronto Cityscape

There are so many cliché images out there of New York, Paris, and London. Poster stores, framing stores, Homesense, Target, Winners, you name it. Although these three cities are amazing, I’d rather hang images of the city I live and breathe on my apartment walls, not somewhere that I have been a just handful of times.  That’s why Christine and I were attracted to the exhibit entitled Toronto by Adam Shax at Lakeview Restaurant, as part of the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival. When I moved into my latest apartment, I decided I wanted to buy images of Toronto to hang above my couch, but did you know they are next to impossible to find? You can’t buy them anywhere – which made me want them even more. I ended up purchasing old Toronto images from the Toronto Star online, but they are not nearly the same as what we saw here….

Lakeview Restaurant, Dundas West

Massy Hall, Victoria Street

Lula Lounge, Dundas West

Velvet Underground, Queen West

The images were so vibrant, colourful and glowing! They look so animated and almost like illustrations…if you weren’t familiar with the venues in real life. Massy Hall looks so elegant, Lula Lounge screams colour, and I’m actually shocked at how good the Velvet Underground looks. I walk by it weekly and it’s not one of my favourite places because of its dingy and dirty vibe, but Shax manages to make it look beautiful. Impressive.

I wore a mix of vintage and new finds. My classic Levis red tab jean jacket and purse were both thrifted gifts from BFF for my birthday. It’s pretty cool to have a friend that knows what vintage things you like. Striped tights are from H&M, Jazz booties are from Spring Shoes, and my floral dress came from a clothing swap party. How many photo exhibits have you hit this month? Take a closer look around, there are amazing photos everywhere for the month of May!

Interesting Facts: 1) Lakeview Restaurant is open 24 hrs a day to satisfy your late night hunger pangs. And 2) there were many scenes filmed at Lakeview for the movie Hairspray with John Travolta! JD

Timeless Trench

Can I just say I love open jacket weather? Yes, we’ve had a few wonky days here and there but overall we can’t complain because its been pretty dang nice. And that’s a bold statement coming from my mouth because I am Queen cold. I get shivers just thinking about wind and chilliness.

This is my classic trench from Zara and I think it was a fantastic find. So far it has proven to remain timeless and in good condition, but one day I would like to own a classic Burberry trench. Not because of the name, but because I expect the material and fit to be impeccable and last a lifetime. My scarf was a gift from my ma.

My jeans are by Rich & Skinny (gift), shirt is by Hugo Boss (sample sale), belt is from a clothing swap ($0), grey blazer is from Zara ($89), and jazz booties are from Spring Shoes ($29). I got them at the Duff. Always great finds there. This grey blazer is turning out to be a staple of mine as well. I have worn it so many ways and the I like that it can go from work to night, or dressy to casual, and above all – it’s comfortable! A lot more comfortable than a regular blazer. Keepin’ it real on a Tuesday. JD
