One of my favourite things to do on a Sunday is go somewhere laid back for brunch followed by a round of vintage shopping with an old friend. A few Sundays back I wanted to try something new so my friend Annie and I went to the Hoof Cafe on Dundas West. For about 5 minutes. It was really cool and adorable inside, but when I saw the menu certain words flashed to my eyes like “tongue, and suckling pig” — we just couldn’t do it. I should’ve checked the menu first (lesson learned). We politely made a fast exit and went on to Musa (my fave!).  I also really like Saving Grace which is between the two. All on Dundas West.

Following a big plate of eggs, bacon, potatoes, and toast we ventured to Ossington St. and hit Vintage Mix 1, I Miss You Vintage, and Silver Falls Vintage. We ended up buying matching purses at I Miss You which we coined our “friendship purse” – yes we are 12 years old. These cute red purses only set us back $8 each. Score! JD

Dream of Californiacation

Just got back from an amazing LA vaykay. I went to visit my best friend Christina and her man friend David. They’re living in Venice Beach at the moment which is one of the best parts of Cali in my opinion. Their teeny apartment was just outside this adorable little house.

We were about 30 seconds from Venice Beach. Look at the sun! Perfection. 

The days were sunny and warm, but the nights cooled off a bit so long pants were in order. This was just before going out for dinner at Dusty’s in Silver Lake. It was my first time wearing my chambray shirt from Zara, and I think I’ll be wearing it a lot. I paired it with a braided belt from H&M, Vince riding pants, and cognac coloured booties from Capezio.

Nautical scarf is from H&M; necklace is Forever 21, and my beloved key pin is from the Thrift store in Port Colborne. It’s my favourite piece. Accessories are my VICE.

I loved this garage. Remember who you are, listen to your soul, follow your heart. Words to live by. JD xo

Gumballs & Cupcakes & Pink Drinks Oh My!

Last night The Bay on Queen Street and Fashion Magazine held an event at The Room to showcase their new contemporary space. Pink martinis were in hands while viewing the new Spring collections The Bay has to offer and let me tell you, the designers they carry are impressive!  There are seven mannequins outfitted in Sonia Rkyiel alone and the Spring ’10 Alexander McQueen collection was only steps away. We’re definitely adding The Room to our Saturday shopping trips.
I wore a metallic dress from H&M that I have been waiting to pull from my closet for  months.  My blazer is from Suzy Sheir for just $15.  Tights are from Silks.  CM
I wore a silk shirt dress from H&M with purple tights from American Apparel. My necklace is a new favourite from Forever 21 – I like that it’s chunky and looks a bit vintage. Did you notice the buttons on my sleeve? Those are actually button covers I found at a thrift store in Port Colborne. My shoes are from Payless. JD
Also, we did not leave empty-handed – we couldn’t help but buy something new for Spring – Christine’s purchase was flourescent pink and mine was a bright coral. Just sticking to the challenge from yesterday :)

Lady Look

This is my lay-lady-lay look of the day. I feel very Joan Harris wearing this to the office. Even though I don’t have red hair or a giant rack, this is definitely something Joan would wear. My punch of pink top is from H&M but I actually got it from a clothing swap party. Necklace is a current fave from Aldo Accessories; skirt with leather patch was found at Vintage Mix 1 on Ossington Avenue (amazing vintage store in the city!). Tights are from Aldo Accessories, and shoes are from Payless. JD

Valentino for Valentine’s Day

When I have the time, my hunt for trendy treasures brings me outside the city.  The thrift stores in Toronto are so picked over that I normally leave empty-handed yet, those in the suburbs have the promise of at least one great find.  One occasion brought me to a Value Village in Scarborough where I made, quite possibly, the greatest thrift store find OF ALL TIME.  As I walked through the shoe section last Saturday these Valentino’s, in the classic red colour, practically leapt off the shelf directly into my hands.  To my despair, they were 1.5 sizes too small for my giant feet but they fit perfectly on the footsies of my good friend Jess – a true Cinderella story!

From Russia with Love

It’s Russian hat day! Christine and I both showed up to work wearing our giant Russian hats. On a cold day, this thing is the b e s t. I got mine from my Mother’s closet. No, that’s not the name of the store – I actually took it from my mom’s closet. JD

I found my hat at VV Boutique in Calgary years ago.  I thought that $7.99 for a rabbit fur hat was a good deal however, I am sure that P.E.T.A. would disagree.  CM

Christine and I recently took a little weekend trip to NYC. We ventured to three great markets that we recommend if you’re into vintage, crafty, and unique finds. First stop – the Hells Kitchen Antique Market, at 112 West 25th Street. There we found cool purses, records, and a lot of antique furniture. Second stop was The Market NYC in Nolita at 268 Mulberry St. This one is located in a random old gymnasium. And finally, The Brooklyn Flea! (my fave) located in Dumbo directly under the Brooklyn Bridge. There we spotted Kiki Dunst looking at vintage bracelets, ate some lobster bisque, and finished the day with a walk over the Brooklyn Bridge. What a great day. Can’t wait to go back. JD
